If you want to drive, you need a driving license. But if you come to China and decide to rent or buy a car, then a Chinese driver’s license is required. The following 4 materials are what you need to get your Chinese driver’s license.
1. Passport and a photocopy.
Valid driver’s license from your home country plus a photocopy. Your license must be authenticated overseas by an embassy or consulate of the People’s Republic of China, representative office, liaison office or other office duly authorized by China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
2. A Chinese translation of your license
Before flying to China, take your valid driver’s license to be translated in the embassy or consulate of the People’s Republic of China. You have to fill out a Driver’s Application Form, which you can get at the Vehicle Management Section Office.
3. Physical examination certificate for driving license application

4. Photos
Two photos, black and white or colored, with you facing the camera (without a hat). It should be 3cm by 2.5cm, and taken within the past six months.
Tips: If you hold a valid foreign driver’s license and have a Chinese Residence Certificate for Foreigners valid for more than one year may apply for a non-professional driving license for the same type of vehicle within one year of entry to China. A foreign resident’s Chinese driver's license is valid for the same period as your Alien Residence Certificate. Before the license expires, you must first extend the period of legal residence, then apply for an extension of the license at an appropriate Motor Vehicle Office. However, the accumulated period of validity for a driver’s license cannot exceed six years.
